Some repressed anger there apparently."

I wanted to add that I'm an marginal Everton supporter so that probably set me off too.Robhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17852035467152760472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448613549782052868.post-72619213350627325032011-05-05T01:09:57.294-07:002011-05-05T01:09:57.294-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Robhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17852035467152760472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448613549782052868.post-48563197420412489882011-05-04T14:06:53.489-07:002011-05-04T14:06:53.489-07:00I do know the etymology, and acknowledge the US Me...I do know the etymology, and acknowledge the US Men's team as being capable of some admirable and dedicated wins.

But it's very hard to take pride in them. They are, in the end, a motley assemblage of players not-quite-good enough to be in the top European teams. They play hard, they're dedicated, but... there's no identity to hang support on. They show up once every four years, do respectably if not well in the World Cup, and slink away into ignominy shortly thereafter.

But more to the point, consider how I describe teams I love in this post. I have far more mean things to say about England and Liverpool than I do nice things. So yes, my national team can't win anything and gets the name of the sport wrong. What about that sounds like I don't love them for it? :)Elizabeth Sandiferhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18337209180846868581noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5448613549782052868.post-52795464598268700442011-05-04T14:02:05.878-07:002011-05-04T14:02:05.878-07:00Sheesh. The US drew your beloved England and regularly ranks in the top 20. On the other hand in the context of this blog they were quite poor during the NES era.

But the name thing? Surely you know that the etymology of the term soccer (association football) well enough to realize that it originated to differentiate it from other codes of football (e.g., rugby). If for some reason rugby became dominant, it's quite conceivable that the name soccer would have stuck in England.

Sod it, I'm Canadian, so I don't care if your national team goes unsupported.Robhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17852035467152760472noreply@blogger.com
